Indian Railways has implemented revised penalties for a wide range of passenger and railway-related offences with effect from 20 June 2026, introducing stricter fines for violations ranging from ticketless travel and unauthorized entry into reserved coaches to trespassing, illegal hawking, smoking, and carrying prohibited goods. The revised penalty structure is intended to promote greater passenger discipline, discourage violations of railway rules, ensure smoother train operations, safeguard railway property, and enhance the safety, security, and comfort of passengers across the railway network. The move also seeks to reduce incidents that disrupt railway services and improve compliance with existing regulations. Railway authorities have appealed to passengers to familiarize themselves with the revised penalties, strictly follow railway rules during their journey, and extend full cooperation to Ticket Travelling Examiners (TTEs) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel during ticket inspections, security checks, and other enforcement drives conducted across stations and trains.

Penalties introduced from 20 June 2026 include:

1) Travelling without ticket- 500/-

2) Travelling on another's ticket- 500/-

3) Illegal hawking- 2000/-

4) Drunkenness & nuisance- 1000/-

5) Abusive language- 1000/-

6) Obstruction to railway staff duty- 2500/-

7) Tresspassing- 500/-

8) Refusal to deboard reserved coach without valid ticket- 2000/-

9) Disobedience to drivers & conductors- 500/-

10) Travelling in ladies coach by male passengers- 2500/-

11) False goods declaration- 500/- per quintal

12) Carrying offensive goods- 10000/-

13) Defacing public notices- 2000/-

14) Smoking- 2000/-
