Eastern Railway achieved a historic milestone in the financial year 2024-25, surpassing 100 million tonnes of freight loading for the first time. Despite being predominantly a passenger-carrying railway, Eastern Railway successfully met its ambitious freight target, transporting 100.87 million tonnes—a 16.1% increase compared to 86.88 million tonnes in 2023-24.

Notably, Eastern Railway contributed 52% of the total incremental freight loading across Indian Railways in 2024-25, making it the leading zone in freight transportation. This remarkable achievement was made possible through the dedication and perseverance of the Eastern Railway team. Shri Milind Deouskar, General Manager of Eastern Railway, played a crucial role in motivating the team to enhance freight transport. The introduction of new freight commodities, modernization of freight terminals, and the opening of new goods sheds significantly contributed to this growth.

Eastern Railway also recorded the highest increase in freight earnings among all zonal railways. The freight revenue for 2024-25 stood at ₹9,273.74 crores, reflecting a 21.5% growth compared to ₹7,635.06 crores in 2023-24.

With this groundbreaking achievement, Eastern Railway is rapidly establishing itself as a major freight-carrying zone, setting new benchmarks in Indian Railways’ freight transport operations.
