Penalty of Rs. 1.72 Crore Recovered During Checking Drives in AC Locals (April 2024 – January 2025)

Mumbai’s suburban railway, known as the Lifeline of the City, is one of the busiest railway systems in the world, transporting millions of commuters daily. Western Railway’s Mumbai suburban network carries around 3 million passengers each day through its 1,406 services, including 109 AC locals.

According to The Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, the Mumbai Division runs 109 AC local services daily, carrying approximately 1.26 lakh passengers. From April 2024 to January 2025, the ticket-checking teams detected and penalized over 51,600 cases of irregular travel in AC locals, recovering Rs. 1.72 crore as penalties.

In January 2025 alone, Rs. 20.97 lakh was recovered from 6,258 cases of irregular travel, compared to Rs. 16.07 lakh from 4,743 cases in January 2024. This marks a 31% increase in the penalty amount and a 32% increase in the number of cases detected.

To enhance passenger experience and curb irregular travel, Western Railway has launched several initiatives, including a dedicated AC Task Force and a Special Monitoring Team to address irregular travel issues. Special drives are conducted regularly, and passengers can report complaints about AC local trains 24/7 via Helpline No. 139 or WhatsApp Message No. 9004497364, ensuring prompt action. Ticket-checking performance is monitored daily.

Western Railway remains committed to ensuring a comfortable travel experience by preventing irregular travel. It appeals to passengers to travel with dignity by purchasing valid tickets to avoid inconvenience.
