Indian Railways is set to transform long-distance travel with the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set, a groundbreaking addition to its fleet. On January 15, 2025, the first 16-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train successfully completed extensive trials by the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) over a 540-kilometre stretch of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route. Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, the first Vande Bharat Sleeper set was completed on December 17, 2024, and subsequently tested in the Kota division over 30-40 kilometre segments in early January 2025, achieving speeds of up to 180 km/h.

This milestone marks a significant leap in railway modernization, offering a blend of comfort, speed, and advanced technology, promising a superior travel experience for passengers. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is expected to redefine overnight journeys, bringing luxury and efficiency to long-haul travelers.

Scaling Up Production: The Road Ahead

• After the successful trial of the prototype, production of nine more Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets is scheduled between April and December 2025.
• Indian Railways has placed an order for propulsion electrics for 50 rakes of 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets.
  • M/s Medha will supply propulsion systems for 33 rakes.
  • M/s Alstom will supply propulsion systems for 17 rakes.
• Full-scale production of the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets will begin in 2026-27, bolstering India’s self-reliance in railway technology.

Features of the Train:

• 16 coaches, divided into AC 1st Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier.
• Capacity of 1,128 passengers.
• Equipped with crash buffers, deformation tubes, and a fire barrier wall.
• Automatic doors, cushioned berths, and onboard WiFi.

Before its operational launch, the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) will issue a final certificate after analyzing the trial runs, with the railway safety commissioner evaluating the train at its maximum speed.
