Indian Railways is transforming itself into a future-ready organization, providing faster, safer, and world-class travel experiences to billions of Indians at nominal costs. In the first nine months and 4 days of the current fiscal year, it has already spent 76% of its budgetary outlay. As of January 5, 2025, heavy investments have been made in capacity augmentation, aiming to enhance rail travel in India.
Over the last decade, consistent capital expenditure (Capex) has resulted in 136 Vande Bharat trains, 97% electrification of broad gauge, new lines, gauge conversions, track doubling, and enhanced traffic facilities. This has made rail travel faster, safer, and world-class for millions. Vande Bharat sleeper trains, currently undergoing speed testing and safety certification, will soon revolutionize long-distance travel.
Despite India’s vast geographical, cultural, and linguistic diversity, Indian Railways is investing in infrastructure, technology, and sustainable practices to build a modern, connected, and inclusive India. The organization is committed to long-term progress, ensuring the seeds sown today benefit future generations.
In the first four days of 2025, Indian Railways spent ₹1198 crore on Capex. With nearly three months left in the fiscal year, its total capital expenditure stands at 76%. For FY 2024-25, the total Capex estimate is ₹2,65,200 crore, with ₹1,92,446 crore already spent. Of the ₹50,903 crore allocated for rolling stock, ₹40,367 crore has been spent (79%). In safety-related works, ₹28,281 crore has been spent out of ₹34,412 crore (82%).
Indian Railways is on track to become a world-class entity, serving 2.3 crore passengers daily, and contributing to a “Viksit Bharat.”
