In a Lok Sabha session, Railway Minister Sh. Ashwini Vaishnaw addressed questions regarding the restoration of discounts for various categories of train passengers. He clarified that Indian Railways offers significant subsidies on ticket prices, making train travel more affordable for the public.
Sh. Vaishnaw explained that if the cost of a ticket is Rs 100, passengers are charged only Rs 54, reflecting a 46% discount. This subsidy is part of the larger financial support provided by the government to ensure accessible rail services for all. The minister also highlighted that the Indian Railways allocates a substantial Rs 56,993 crore annually to subsidize ticket prices across all passenger categories.
Replying to another question on rapid train service, he mentioned that the railways has already started the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail service between Bhuj and Ahmedabad. The satisfaction level of passengers is extremely high due to its superior service. Officials stated that the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail has significantly improved intercity connectivity, covering the 359-kilometre distance between Bhuj and Ahmedabad in just 5 hours and 45 minutes, with stops at several stations along the way.
