The Non Interlocking work at Birarajpur Station is set to transform the station into an important freight-handling and operational hub of Chakradharpur Division. With the commissioning of the 5th Goods Coaching Terminal (GCT) of Chakradharpur Division, Birarajpur has gained further importance in the freight network. The commissioning of the new GCT Line will significantly increase the handling capacity of the station and create opportunities for additional loading and unloading traffic.
Birarajpur is already witnessing steady freight activity, with 33 rakes unloaded in the month of May, 34 rakes in June, 30 rakes in July, 42 rakes in August and 29 rakes up to 25th September, 2026. At present, several companies are regularly unloading their commodities at Birarajpur, mainly coal, iron ore and pellets. New freight traffic, including fly ash loading, is expected to be added soon.
The increase in freight handling and unloading capacity will support higher throughput, faster rake turnaround and additional railway revenue. The N.I. work will also strengthen yard capacity and improve operational flexibility through the addition and modification of yard lines. With the provision of a new line on the DN side, detention of coaching trains approaching from the Chandil side will be reduced, helping to ensure smoother train movement and improved punctuality.
Furthermore, the commissioning of the 5th Goods Coaching Terminal of the division provides a strong platform for Public-Private Partnership, encouraging greater private participation in freight handling, logistics and terminal-related activities. Overall, the Birarajpur N.I. Work will enhance operational efficiency, increase freight-handling capacity, attract new traffic, generate additional revenue and strengthen Birarajpur’s role as a key freight terminal of Chakradharpur Division.
