As part of its continued efforts to strengthen railway safety and prevent untoward incidents, Howrah Division of Eastern Railway has successfully closed an unauthorised crossing location between the Jayrambati–Bishnupur section o­n 06 February 2026.

The unauthorised crossing had been identified as an accident-prone location due to multiple risk factors, including frequent cattle movement, unauthorised vehicular access across the railway tracks, and regular train operations o­n the section. Despite earlier efforts, closure of the location could not be achieved owing to public agitation and traffic congestion. In the interim, several safety measures—such as installation of speed breakers, provision of a height gauge, and imposition of a 20 kmph speed restriction o­n trains—were implemented to mitigate risks.

Following the closure, the location has now been fully secured through the erection of rail posts, effectively preventing unauthorised vehicular movement across the railway track. With the permanent closure of the crossing, the earlier speed restriction has also been withdrawn.

This development marks the successful closure of o­ne out of seven identified four-wheeler trespassing locations in the Division. The closure is expected to significantly enhance passenger safety, train operational safety, and protection of wildlife, while also improving train punctuality and overall operational efficiency.

The remaining six unauthorised crossings have been planned for closure in a phased manner, reaffirming Howrah Division’s commitment to strengthening field-level safety infrastructure and ensuring safe and uninterrupted train operations.

Eastern Railway appeals to the public to cooperate with safety initiatives and refrain from using unauthorised railway crossings, as railway safety is a shared responsibility.
