Shri Somesh Kumar Takes Additional Charge as General Manager, Banaras Locomotive Works

Shri Somesh Kumar, a senior and experienced officer of the 1987 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE), has assumed additional charge as General Manager of Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi. He is presently serving as Additional Member (Traction) in the Railway Board, New Delhi.

Shri Somesh Kumar began his illustrious career in Indian Railways in 1991 as Assistant Electrical Engineer (General) in Jhansi Division. Over a distinguished career spanning nearly 34 years, he has held several important positions across Indian Railways, demonstrating exceptional leadership and technical acumen.

He has made notable contributions while serving in key Railway zones and production units such as Jhansi, BLW, Bhopal, Nagpur, Ambala, Lucknow, Secunderabad, and Chennai.

Remarkable achievements in energy conservation at South Central Railway, Secunderabad:
During his tenure as Principal Chief Electrical Engineer, South Central Railway, Secunderabad, the zone received four National Energy Conservation Awards—the highest number ever achieved by any Zonal Railway. Additionally, various divisions earned five State-level and six CII Awards for energy efficiency.

Outstanding administrative performance in Nagpur Division:
As Divisional Railway Manager, Nagpur, under his leadership, the division received 7 shields during Railway Week 2018–19 and 8 shields in 2019–20. He was also honored with a special commendation from the Railway Board for his efforts in increasing freight loading.

Significant safety improvements in Southern Railway:
As Principal Chief Safety Officer, Southern Railway, Chennai, he led extensive safety audits and drives, resulting in zero major accidents during his tenure.

Contribution to 100% electrification and technological advancement:
As Principal Chief Electrical Engineer, Southern Railway, he played a pivotal role in achieving 100% electrification and strengthening the Crew Management System (CMS). It is noteworthy that Shri Somesh Kumar had earlier served at BLW (then DLW) as Deputy Chief Design Engineer (E.M.) from March 2005 to November 2011.
