In a notable advancement towards sustainable energy, Indian Railways has successfully installed approximately 209 megawatts (MW) of solar power capacity across 2,249 stations and service buildings as of February 2025. This initiative aligns with the government's commitment to promoting renewable energy and achieving long-term financial savings.​

Over the past five years, the railway network has significantly accelerated its solar installations, adding 1,489 units—2.3 times the 628 units installed in the preceding five years. Rajasthan leads this expansion with 275 installations, followed closely by Maharashtra with 270, and West Bengal with 237. Other states making substantial contributions include Uttar Pradesh (204 installations), Andhra Pradesh (198), and Karnataka (146).​

Indian Railways plans to progressively procure renewable energy through various modes, including Round The Clock (RTC) power solutions that integrate solar and wind energy. Most solar plant installations are being undertaken through Power Purchase Agreements under the developer mode.​

The implementation of solar energy faced challenges such as regulatory constraints and connectivity issues. To address these, Indian Railways engaged in regular consultations with State Governments and Transmission Utilities, facilitating smoother transitions to renewable energy sources.​

This strategic move not only underscores Indian Railways' commitment to environmental sustainability but also positions it as a leader in adopting green energy solutions within the transportation sector.
