Indian Railways is all set to introduce the country's first hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant milestone in both technological advancement and environmental conservation. The train will soon begin trial runs between Jind and Sonipat stations in Haryana.

Designed by the Research, Design, and Standards Organization (RDSO), this cutting-edge train's design was finalized in December 2021. It will feature 8 passenger coaches, with a capacity to carry 2,638 passengers. The train’s maximum speed will be 110 km/h, making it ideal for short-distance travel. Three of its coaches will be dedicated to hydrogen cylinders, fuel cell converters, batteries, and air reserve systems.

Currently, the integration work is progressing at Chennai's Integral Coach Factory (ICF). While hydrogen-powered trains have been tested in countries like Germany and China, Germany is the only nation to have a successful hydrogen train in operation. India’s first hydrogen train will not only promote the use of green energy but also play a key role in reducing the environmental impact of rail transport.
