In a significant development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a one-year extension in tenure for Shri Satish Kumar, the incumbent Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Railway Board. The decision ensures leadership continuity for Indian Railways as it undergoes major transformations.

According to the official notification, the service extension will be effective from September 1, 2025. Shri Kumar's appointment is on a re-employment, contract basis under the existing terms and conditions. His tenure will continue for one year or until further orders are issued, whichever is earlier. As the Chairman & CEO of the Railway Board, he is the top official responsible for overseeing the operations, modernization, and strategic projects of the entire Indian Railways network. This extension is seen as a crucial step to maintain momentum on the various ongoing initiatives and reforms within Indian Railways, ensuring stability in policy and project implementation.
