Budget allocation for Maharashtra’s railway infrastructure and safety works has risen significantly, from an annual average of ₹1,171 crore (2009–14) to ₹23,778 crore in 2025–26, which is more than a 20-fold increase. New track commissioning also grew by over three times, from 292 km (58.4 km/year) during 2009–14 to 2,292 km (208.36 km/year) in 2014–25.

As of April 1, 2025, 38 projects (11 New Lines, 2 Gauge Conversion, and 25 Doubling) are sanctioned for Maharashtra, with a total length of 5,098 km and a cost of ₹89,780 crore. So far, 2,360 km have been commissioned, and an expenditure of ₹39,407 crore has been incurred up to March 2025. The breakdown of this expenditure is as follows: ₹10,504 crore for New Lines, ₹4,286 crore for Gauge Conversion, and ₹24,617 crore for Doubling/Multitracking projects.

Recently Completed and Ongoing Projects

Ten projects have been recently completed, including the Jabalpur–Gondia Gauge Conversion (300 km, ₹2,005 Cr), Chhindwara–Nagpur Gauge Conversion (150 km, ₹1,512 Cr), and Daund–Gulbarga Doubling (225 km, ₹3,182 Cr). Key ongoing works include the Bhusawal–Khandwa 3rd & 4th Line (131 km, ₹3,285 Cr) and a survey for the Murtizapur–Achalpur Gauge Conversion.

Key Sanctioned Projects

A large number of projects have been sanctioned to further expand the railway network. These include seven New Line projects:

• Ahmednagar–Beed–Parli Vaijnath (261 km, ₹4,957 Cr)
• Baramati–Lonand (64 km, ₹1,844 Cr)
• Wardha–Nanded (284 km, ₹3,445 Cr)
• Dhule–Nardana (51 km, ₹1,171 Cr)
• Manmad–Indore (309 km, ₹16,321 Cr)
• Wadsa-Gadchiroli (52 km, ₹1,886 Cr)
• Jalna-Jalgaon (174 km, ₹5,804 Cr)

There are also several doubling and multi-tracking projects, such as:

• Pune–Miraj–Londa Doubling (466 km, ₹6,463 Cr)
• Daund–Manmad Doubling (236 km, ₹30,376 Cr)
• Kalyan-Kasara 3rd line (68 km, ₹1,433 Cr)
• Wardha-Nagpur 3rd line (76 km, ₹698 Cr)
• Manmad Jalgaon 3rd line (160 km, ₹1,677 Cr)
• Kazipet-Ballarshah 3rd line (202 km, ₹3,183 Cr)
• Jalgaon-Manmad 4th Line (160 km, ₹2,574 Cr)

Other Developments

The High-Speed Bullet Train project in Maharashtra has completed 100% of its land acquisition, and construction work is currently in progress. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) has a 178 km section in Maharashtra, with 76 km already commissioned, and the remaining work is underway. These projects are expected to enhance capacity, reduce bottlenecks, and boost the economy. Additionally, 27 multi-tracking projects spanning 1,991 km and costing approximately ₹47,126 crore were sanctioned from FY 2022–23 to the current FY.
