Indian Railways Brings Historic Transformation to Jammu & Kashmir with USBRL, Modern Track Maintenance & Coach Upgradation

India is on the move. In a defining moment for national connectivity, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, on 6th June 2025, inaugurated the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL), including the engineering marvels—Chenab and Anji bridges—establishing seamless rail connectivity between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley. This transformative step not only integrates the region into the national rail grid but also opens new avenues for development, tourism, and logistics in one of India’s most challenging terrains.

1. Vande Bharat Revolutionizes Travel in the Valley

With the launch of the Vande Bharat Express between Katra and Srinagar, high-speed rail has reached the heart of Kashmir. This premium train service is already proving to be a game-changer, offering faster, more reliable, and more comfortable transportation for passengers in the newly connected region. The Vande Bharat’s entry into the Valley is symbolic of the broader modernization sweeping across Indian Railways.

2. USBRL Paves the Way for Modern Track Maintenance

Beyond connectivity, USBRL has enabled a paradigm shift in railway operations in Kashmir. What was once an area reliant on manual track upkeep now hosts state-of-the-art maintenance machinery, significantly improving operational efficiency and safety.

Modern track equipment has already made its presence felt:

• A Tamping Machine, deployed in June 2025, has tamped 88 km of track, ensuring improved alignment and smoother rides.

• Two Ballast Cleaning Machines (BCMs) have deep-screened 11.5 km of track, while two more BCMs inducted in July have added 2.5 km to this progress.

• To support this, 17 ballast rakes from Kathua, Qazigund, Madhopur, and Jind delivered over 19,000 cubic meters of ballast to the Valley.

• Additionally, advanced Track Recording Car (TRC) and Oscillation Monitoring System (OMS) runs conducted in June and July 2025 have provided critical data to fine-tune maintenance efforts.

These collective efforts are rapidly enhancing the quality, stability, and safety of tracks across Kashmir.

3. Part of a Nationwide Railway Transformation

The achievements in Kashmir are part of a broader national strategy. Indian Railways is undergoing a historic transformation in track infrastructure. As of early 2025, 78% of railway tracks now support speeds of 110 kmph or more, up from 39% in 2014, despite the massive expansion of the network from 79,342 km to over 1 lakh km.

Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw has emphasized that the future of track maintenance will be driven by science and technology. Initiatives include the deployment of:

• Ultrasound fracture detection machines

• Road-cum-rail vehicles

• AI-powered defect detection systems

• Modern integrated track measurement tools

These advancements are set to improve not just safety, but also working conditions for frontline track maintenance teams.

4. Coach Maintenance Enters a New Era in the Valley

Equally significant is the breakthrough in coach maintenance. Before USBRL, the absence of rail connectivity forced authorities to transport DEMU/MEMU rakes from Budgam to Lucknow via road—a time-consuming and inefficient process.

Now, with USBRL operational, coaches from the Kashmir Valley are being moved via rail for maintenance—ushering in a new era of operational ease and efficiency.

5. Maintenance Progress Highlights:

• One MEMU rake has completed its Periodic Overhauling (POH) and is back in service; another will be ready by end of July 2025.

• A DEMU rake has been overhauled at the Charbagh workshop, and another will be completed by mid-August 2025.

• An additional rake undergoing POH at the Jalandhar shed is set to be operational by end of July 2025.

• Four more DEMU rakes are planned for upgradation at Charbagh and Jalandhar workshops.

6. Modern Features Redefine Passenger Experience

Coach refurbishments are being executed with a strong focus on comfort, aesthetics, and safety. Upgrades include:

• Anti-graffiti PU painting in vibrant colours

• Installation of bio-toilets, new water pumps, and hopper-type windows

• New polycarbonate seats, standing handles, and PVC flooring

• Refurbished fans, lights, and stainless-steel fittings

• Enhanced passenger information systems and mobile charging ports (Type A & C)

• Improved power supply with auto-changeover panels

All coaches in the region are scheduled to be completely upgraded by 31st August 2025, ensuring world-class amenities for passengers in the Kashmir Valley.

7. The Railways: A True Lifeline for Jammu & Kashmir

From bridging terrains to modernizing infrastructure, Indian Railways is scripting a remarkable chapter in the story of Jammu & Kashmir.
