Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), a premier production unit of Indian Railways, has once again demonstrated its quality and technical efficiency at the international level under the able leadership of General Manager Shri Naresh Pal Singh.

During the years 2021–22 and 2022–23, six diesel locomotives (3000 HP AC-AC) were successfully supplied by BLW to Mozambique’s railway company CFM, and they are currently operating successfully in Mozambique.

In view of the excellent performance and reliability of these earlier locomotives, Mozambique Railways (CFM) has awarded another major contract to BLW. This new contract, awarded through M/s RITES, is for the manufacture and supply of 10 state-of-the-art 3300 HP AC-AC diesel-electric locomotives.

Of these 10 locomotives, two have been successfully delivered to Mozambique in June 2025, while the remaining eight are scheduled for delivery by December 2025. These locomotives are capable of running at a maximum speed of 100 kmph on Cape Gauge (1067 mm).

Technological Innovations and Driver Amenities
These 3300 HP AC-AC diesel-electric locomotives, manufactured by BLW, are not only technologically advanced but are also equipped with several driver-friendly amenities, including a refrigerator, hot plate, mobile holder, aesthetically designed cab, and toilet facilities.
These features ensure enhanced driver comfort and reflect workplace standards comparable to international benchmarks.

Global Reach of "Make in India"
This achievement by BLW is a testament to India's technical prowess and further strengthens the ‘Make in India – Make for the World’ initiative. The export of these locomotives to Mozambique is a significant step forward for India’s engineering capabilities, self-reliance, and global partnerships.

This success reinforces that Indian Railway manufacturing units are capable of producing world-class locomotives, further elevating the global reputation of ‘Made in India’.

BLW has manufactured and exported 12-cylinder, 3300 horsepower AC-AC Cape Gauge diesel-electric locomotives specifically for Mozambique.

It is noteworthy that since its establishment on 23 April 1956, Banaras Locomotive Works has manufactured more than 10,000 locomotives for Indian Railways, as well as for steel plants, mines, ports, and export markets. It has emerged as India’s leading locomotive manufacturer. The first locomotive was exported to Tanzania in January 1976. Since then, BLW has supplied locomotives to countries such as Vietnam, Mali, Senegal, Angola, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mozambique, Sudan, and others.
