Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s first Vertical Lift Railway Sea Bridge, the New Pamban Bridge, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu on 06th April, 2025. The PM flagged off a new train service and a Coast Guard ship during a symbolic launch held on the Pamban Road Bridge. He also offered prayers at the revered Ramanathaswamy Temple.

At the event, the PM flagged off the new Rameswaram–Tambaram train service, in the presence of Shri R.N. Ravi, Governor of Tamil Nadu; Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railways; Dr. L. Murugan, MoS for I&B; and other dignitaries. Souvenir passes were issued to media, students, and officials as part of the inaugural celebration.

Following this, the PM remotely activated the vertical lift mechanism of the bridge, allowing Indian Coast Guard ship C-432, commanded by Asst. Commandant Avkash Rawat, to pass beneath. The vessel, built by L&T, is a modern patrol ship enhancing maritime security in the Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar.

Later, at a grand ceremony at Tamil Nadu Alayam Grounds, the PM officially dedicated the New Pamban Bridge and launched road and highway projects worth ₹8,500 crores. These include the 4-laning of Walajahpet–Andhra Pradesh Border (NH-40), and sections of NH-332, NH-32, and NH-36 — enhancing port connectivity and easing travel.

Calling it a “21st-century engineering marvel,” the PM lauded the bridge's role in improving rail connectivity and maritime navigation, benefiting over 25 lakh pilgrims annually. Short films showcasing the projects' impact were screened at the event.
