Amrit Bharat Stations: The Upgradation and Makeover of Guindy Station is progressing rapidly

Guindy Railway Station, located in the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu section, is undergoing modernization under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). This key suburban hub serves over 68,000 passengers daily and facilitates more than 200 EMU/MEMU services along with 98 express trains across five platforms.

Strategic Importance: Guindy, derived from the Tamil word "Kindi" (gateway), is a crucial entry point to the Guindy Forest Reserve, Raj Bhavan, and major educational, commercial, and industrial zones. It provides access to prestigious institutions like IIT Madras and Anna University, the Guindy Industrial Estate, and tourist attractions such as Guindy National Park, Birla Planetarium, and Gandhi Mandapam.

Upgradation Highlights: The modernization, with a sanctioned cost of Rs. 13.50 Crores, aims to enhance both infrastructure and passenger amenities:

  • Station Façade: Aesthetic enhancement on both sides for a modern, appealing entrance.
  • Entry and Circulating Areas: Redesigned for smoother passenger flow with pedestrian pathways and improved vehicle circulation.
  • New Pedestrian Plaza: A plaza with seating, signage, and wayfinding elements.
  • Upgraded Platform Infrastructure: Resurfacing platforms, additional shelters, and better lighting for enhanced safety.
  • Advanced Passenger Information Systems: Real-time updates through digital boards and an upgraded public announcement system.
  • Security: Installation of high-resolution CCTV cameras across the station.

Work Progress and Timeline: The project is set to complete by May 2025. Completed works include the parking area, lift installation, and shelter reroofing. Ongoing tasks involve platform resurfacing and the development of pedestrian pathways.

Benefits to Commuters: The upgrades will offer improved facilities, making travel more comfortable. The station's intermodal connectivity, with Chennai Metro and MTC buses, enhances city-wide accessibility for commuters. This project will significantly improve convenience for students, professionals, and daily travelers, while boosting local commerce and economic growth.
