Amrit Bharat Stations: The Upgradation and Makeover of Guindy Station

Guindy Railway Station, a key suburban hub in the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu section, is undergoing modernization under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS).

Strategic Importance of Guindy Station

Guindy, named after the Tamil word "Kindi" (meaning gateway), is a vital entry point to the Guindy Forest Reserve and the Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Tamil Nadu Governor. It connects to key educational, commercial, and industrial zones, including IIT Madras, Anna University, Guindy Industrial Estate, and tourist spots like Guindy National Park and Birla Planetarium. The station handles over 200 EMU/MEMU services and 98 express trains daily, serving 68,000 passengers across five platforms.

Upgradation Highlights

The Guindy Station upgradation project, sanctioned at Rs. 13.50 Crores, aims to modernize infrastructure and improve passenger amenities:

  • Station Façade Enhancement: Aesthetic improvements on both sides of the station for a modern entrance.
  • Improved Entry and Circulating Areas: Redesigned entry with pedestrian pathways and better vehicle circulation.
  • New Pedestrian Plaza: A plaza with signage, seating, and enhanced accessibility.
  • Upgraded Platforms: Resurfaced flooring, additional shelters, and improved lighting.
  • Advanced Passenger Info Systems: Digital display boards and improved public announcements.
  • Enhanced Security: High-resolution CCTV cameras across the station.

These changes will create a modern intermodal hub, improving connectivity between suburban rail, metro, and bus services.

Work Progress and Timeline

The project is expected to complete by May 2025. Completed works include parking area (950 sqm), lift installation (3 nos.), and shelter reroofing (2400 sqm). Ongoing work includes pedestrian pathways, platform resurfacing (6500 sqm), and electrical upgrades.

Benefits to Commuters

The upgraded station will offer better facilities like improved platforms, booking offices, shelters, parking, and enhanced security. It will also enhance intermodal transportation, connecting suburban trains, metro services, and buses for easier commuting across Chennai, especially for students, office-goers, and business travelers.
