The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to revolutionize urban logistics by introducing cargo transportation services on its metro network. In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the South Asia Pacific region, DMRC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Blue Dart, India’s leading express logistics provider, to facilitate freight movement via metro trains.

Under this collaboration, Blue Dart will utilize metro services during non-peak hours to transport parcels, reducing reliance on road transport. This move aims to ease congestion, lower vehicular emissions, and ensure quicker, more reliable deliveries across Delhi-NCR. The partnership reflects DMRC’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility while optimizing metro infrastructure for efficient logistics.

Globally, metro systems are exploring freight solutions to enhance efficiency. DMRC is in discussions with Madrid Metro, which has successfully piloted a similar initiative, to exchange insights and best practices.

By integrating first-mile and last-mile connectivity through metro-enabled logistics hubs, DMRC is laying the foundation for a sustainable urban freight ecosystem. Plans are underway to expand the cargo network to additional metro stations, setting new standards in green and efficient freight transportation.

This pioneering initiative positions Delhi Metro as a frontrunner in sustainable urban logistics, redefining freight movement in metropolitan areas with innovation and environmental responsibility.
